I had my son help me come up with a few questions for my interview with my interview with Zeus McClerkin a star player for the Harlem Globetrotters. Even in an interview he was fun, entertaining, and made us laugh. Zeus and the Harlem Globetrotters are coming to the Manchester Arena March 22nd for an incredible night of family entertainment don't miss your chance to make night full of family memories! |
How did you come into your career with the Harlem Globetrotters? Where did you begin your basketball career?
I use to play against the Harlem Globetrotters for the Washington Generals and the Globetrotters got tired of me dunking on them so they signed me onto their team! My basketball career started in the 11th grade. I got cut from every team I tried out for from 6th grade to 10th grade and the summer between my sophomore and junior year I grew 5 inches and finally made my first team. My coaches all said that I was too nice and I smiled too much and today, I get paid to do those things.
What does a typical day of training look like for you?
Training, I don’t train! Just kidding. We play 320 games each year in 260 cities and we get to the arena 2 hours before and that’s when we go through a pretty strenuous training exercise where we do lay-up lines, shooting shots from the stands and try new dunks out. So I basically practice some skill almost every day.
What does your diet consist of? Can you eat all the junk food you want or does your trainer have you on a strict diet? (My son asks how much ice cream can you eat)
Oh man, I can eat a TON of ice cream! Ice cream is probably my kryptonite. I’m trying to stay away from dairy products right now, but it’s tough when I’m on the road. I try to eat healthy and stay away from red meat, but I love pizza. That’s my other kryptonite.
Where have you been able to travel because of your job?
I’ve been to 25 countries around the world and the coolest country I’ve been to besides the United States, is Israel. I walked the streets of Jerusalem and that place holds a lot of history for me because I’m also a minister at my church. Also, Paris, France and it was cool seeing the Eiffel Tower.
What is your favorite thing about being a Harlem Globetrotter?
The fact that everyone recognizes you before you even come in. When they see the Harlem Globetrotter emblem, it takes them back to a happier time in their life when they went to a game with their parents or grandparents. Even though they don’t know who I am, they have a happy memory because they remember going to those games and how it made them feel. I like the fact that people smile at the sight of me because it puts a happy memory in their mind.
