Every Wednesday, Macaroni KID Nashua shares 5 things to do THIS WEEKEND with your kids (or sometimes for your kids) in the Greater Nashua area.
Here are our picks for the weekend of FEBRUARY 27, 2026 with a special SNOWED-IN EDITION of our Top 5:
The blizzard hit. The snow piled up. The driveway still isn’t fully visible.
With another small round of snow possible today, we’re here's 5 ways to turn post-blizzard cabin fever into something fun.
1. Pirate Snow Treasure Hunt 🏴☠️❄️
Turn your backyard into frozen treasure territory.

Make the treasure:
Fill ice cube trays or muffin tins with water and a few drops of food coloring. Let them freeze overnight (outside works perfectly right now). Once frozen, pop them out — instant pirate gems.
Hide the loot:
Tuck the frozen jewels into snowbanks, along sled paths, or lightly buried throughout the yard.
Send in the pirates:
Give kids a bucket and a spoon or small shovel. Add pirate names for maximum enthusiasm.
Level it up by:
- Drawing a simple treasure map
- Giving hot/cold clues
- Assigning point values by color
- Making it a timed challenge
If they’re digging for treasure, they’re not digging random driveway holes.
2. Make a Snow Rainbow 🌈
When everything outside feels white and gray, add some color.
Fill squeeze bottles (or cleaned-out condiment bottles) with water and a few drops of food coloring. Head outside and let the kids paint the snow.
They can:
- Create giant rainbows across snowbanks
- Write colorful messages
- Design obstacle paths
- Turn the yard into a winter art gallery
It’s simple, inexpensive, and surprisingly cheerful — especially when sunlight hits the snow and the colors pop.
3. Snow Day Olympics 🥇
Channel that extra energy into friendly competition.
Create backyard challenges like:
- Longest sled ride
- Most creative snow sculpture
- Snowball target toss
- Fastest (safe!) shovel relay
Make scorecards. Hand out paper medals. Narrate like you’re live on the Winter Games broadcast from Southern New Hampshire.
Adding structure turns “we’re stuck” into “this was planned.”
4. Cook Something That Takes Its Time 🍲
Blizzard weekends are built for slow recipes.
Let kids:
- Measure ingredients
- Stir sauces
- Roll dough
- Taste test (quality control is serious business)
Soup, homemade pizza, banana bread — anything that fills the house with that warm, cozy smell.
These are the afternoons kids remember.
5. Start a “When the Snow Melts” List ☀️
Shift the focus from what’s canceled to what’s coming.
Have the kids brainstorm:
- First playground visit
- First ice cream trip
- First muddy puddle jump
- First bike ride
Write it down. Post it on the fridge. Build anticipation.
Winter doesn’t last forever — even if it feels like it this week.
A Quick Note
Many local businesses are still digging out and navigating limited parking. If you do plan to head out later this week, check directly with venues before going.
When the roads clear and things reopen fully, let’s show up for our local businesses — they’ve been digging out right alongside us.
For now: stay safe, stay warm, and may your driveway reappear soon.
