Description

The annual Hollis Strawberry Festival is on Sunday, June 23rd, from 2pm until 4pm on Monument Square in the middle of the village of Hollis. In the event of rain the festival will move indoors to the Hollis Brookline Middle School, which is just across Rt. 122 / Main Street from Monument Square.

Presented by the Hollis Town Band and the Hollis Woman’s Club, this has been an annual event since shortly after the band got started. The earliest newspaper reference to the Strawberry Festival was in 1946. The Hollis Town Band was originally founded in 1943 as the Hollis Church School Band, before there was instrumental music in the public school. Originally the Strawberry Festival was run entirely by the Hollis Church School Band families but by 1978 it had grown too large to be handled just by one organization and the Hollis Woman’s Club stepped in to help.

This is one of the major fund-raisers for the organizations, each of which offers scholarships and supports other community endeavors. The Hollis Town Band currently has seventy members on its roster coming from eighteen different communities. The band members gather every Wednesday evening to rehearse throughout the year and there is no membership fee to join. Currently the ages range from 14 on up to well past retirement age and the members come from a wide variety of professions. There is something special about the town of Hollis and the band itself which makes it an important part of people’s lives.

The Hollis Woman's Club, which was organized in 1906, is an active group of approximately 85 members representing several towns. Members are from Hollis, Brookline, Nashua, Milford, Amherst, Northwood, Merrimack, and other surrounding towns including northern MA. The Hollis Woman's Club supports several different local charities and awards scholarships each spring,

The Hollis Woman's Club is dedicated to community improvement through philanthropic donations, educational programs, civic support and social activities. The Strawberry Festival is the major fundraising effort of the Hollis Women's Club. All members of the Hollis Woman's Club are requested to participate in some capacity.

So bring a blanket or some lawn chairs if you wish, bring a picnic lunch if you’d like, but come to Monument Square in Hollis on Sunday, June 23rd from 2 to 4pm. The desserts are for sale and the profits are split evenly between the two groups so that they can carry on their work keeping Hollis the very special town that it is.
